Welcome

Welcome to Are we there yet? Education in Trinidad and Tobago...
The 2010 SEA results are out, we await CXC and 'A' levels. After 48 years of Independence are we satisfied with the state of education in Trinidad and Tobago? What are your thoughts?

  1. I am not satisfied with the state of education in T&T. While I must be fair and say that we have most certainly come a long way in 48 years, there is much that can still be done, and at ALL levels of the system.

I am overjoyed that every citizen now has a chance to continue his/her education at the expense of the Government (better known as the Citizens of T&T)if they want to!! However, I am disappointed at the number of males who are not taking advantage of the chance to improve their educational status. It is a fact - worldwide and of course here too in T&T - that there are larger numbers of females striving ahead with their education. We need to start pulling the boys/men along, they need to come up to par.

A major peeve of mine, is the lack of use of technology in our schools from the primary to the tertiary levels. Technology is here to stay, it is here to help us improve our teaching and learning, it is here to assist us as teachers in getting our students to become critical thinkers - which we all know they are not. I want to see all our teachers at every level of education embracing the technology - each in his/her own way; starting out small, but WILLING to make an effort! Did I say that was my dream? Well I guess it is.

I am looking forward to 2020 and to seeing our beautiful twin island state of Trinidad and Tobago making its mark in the world as a developed nation!

  2. Ayles-Anne's comments point to some key concerns that are affecting our education system and retarding its progress: male underachievement, limited use of technology, and a general apathy throughout the sector. The question therefore is, "How do we bring about change? What are the steps that must be taken to realise meaningful and sustainable change?" I humbly suggest that the first step is Advocacy. We need to build public awareness and mobilise citizens to take action. I welcome some suggestions.
